Global Issues Series: Myanmar

In 2021, a military junta overthrew the legitimate, democratic government of Myanmar, ruling the country ever since. The 2026 elections, won by the military-backed party, have been widely criticised as undemocratic.

Millions have been internally displaced, thousands have died and human rights violations have been widespread. The Rohingya ethnic minority has also experienced severe persecution and ethnic cleansing.  

Perth is home to approximately a quarter of the Myanmar diaspora in Australia. Myanmar receives little national or local media coverage. 

This is an opportunity for Greens members and volunteers to meet with local community members, learn about the current situation, and decide on which actions we can take to advocate for human rights and democracy in Myanmar.

📅 What: Discussion with local community members.

📅 When: Thursday 13 August 2026 from 6pm - 7.30pm.

📅 Where: Online via Zoom or at the Greens WA Office (91 / 215 Stirling St, Perth 6000). Please register to receive the Zoom link.

📅 What to expect: An inclusive space with open dialogue between participants. Refreshments (Burmese cuisine) will be provided, with vegan and gluten-free options available. Venue is wheelchair accessible.

📅 How to get there: Parking is available on Stirling Street. Alternatively, buses leaves from Perth City Station and reach Beaufort Street (after Newcastle Street), or Newcastle Street (after Beaufort Street), after which there is a 5 minute walk.
