As you know we're in a housing crisis but our universities are at the heart of it. While we talk about suburban housing shortages and sky-high rents, the Australian National University quietly assumes the title of the biggest private landlord in town.
Add the University of Canberra into the mix, and together our universities control up to 9,000 homes and rooms—each often costing students $200 a week or more.
That’s over $10 million in profit every single year from young people.
But what makes this even worse is that these universities operate in a total Wild West. No limits on rent hikes. No protection from eviction. No rules letting students leave early. And if you step out of line, they can even freeze your education.
It’s backwards. It’s unjust. And it stops now.
Laura Nuttall MLA will be hosting a discussion panel event with Mehreen Faruqi, Deputy Leader of the Australian Greens and guest speakers Shane Rattenbury, Leader of the ACT Greens, and fellow students. Join us to chat how f#*cked the system is right now and how the ACT Greens are planning to fix it!
