Let's Take Positive Steps to Help the Homeless Community

Love having a chat?

Care about creating a compassionate response to homelessness?

Then come and join us at a stall!

No one should be punished for not having a safe place to call home. But right now, Port Phillip Council is considering changes to local laws that would allow the confiscation of people’s belongings just for sitting, sleeping, or resting on public land.

We know that homelessness is not a crime. In a housing crisis, people need support and pathways into secure housing, not punishment.

That’s why we’re calling on Council to focus on real, compassionate solutions. Together with community stakeholders, we’ve put forward three clear steps Council can take:

1. A Homelessness Hub - A welcoming, culturally safe space where people can access essentials like bathrooms, showers, power, and storage.

2. Education and Support for Traders - Programs that help businesses respond to visible homelessness with empathy and care, building stronger and more inclusive communities.

3. Urgent Investment in Housing - Unlocking existing housing in St Kilda and protecting public housing across our city. Secure homes are the only long-term solution to homelessness.

To show our support, we’ll be hitting the local markets with street stalls, opening up conversations with our neighbours, sharing information, and inviting people to sign our open letter to Council.

Stalls will be managed by the Port Phillip Greens Homelessness Working Group and volunteers will be given full training and everything they need to have some great conversations.

We look forward to seeing you there!
