The City of Albany are building a new road right through the middle of the beautiful and untouched Yakamia Forest; a safe haven for protected native flora and fauna. Let's send a message that we want the City to protect Yakamia Forest!

The City of Albany - once a leafy country town and now a rapidly-growing regional city - has lost almost 65% of its remnant bushland since colonial settlement in 1827, with most of that clearing taking place over the last thirty years.

Now, the City wants to build a big new road right through the middle of Yakamis Forest - the largest remaining area of pristine bushland within Albany’s City limits - claiming it is a priority to connect new suburban and commercial developments with the rest of town.

Yakamia Forest is home to many ecologically significant native flora and fauna including the endangered Western Ringtail Possum, protected Southern Brown Bandicoot, the rare Manna Wattle and several species of unique and rare orchids.

Yakamia Forest is also culturally significant because it is home to many Moodjar, also known as the WA Christmas Tree, which is considered a spirit tree by the Menang Noongar peoples, and Sheoak groves that are believed to be traditional birthing sites.

Building this road will not only impact the cultural and environmental significance of Yakamia Forest but it will split it in half, creating two smaller patches of bushland separated by a large road that will create further danger for wildlife.

So join your Greens MP in WA Parliament, Brad Pettitt, Menang Pibbulman man, Larry Blight, Annabel Paulley and Jon Doust from Friends of Yakamia Forest, and local candidates Diane Evers (Upper House) and Giz Watson (Albany) for a snap action on Friday 11 October to tell the City of Albany the community wants to SAVE YAKAMIA FOREST!

Come along with your friends and family to learn a bit about the cultural and environmental importance of this special place, go for a short walk to see some of what it has to offer and be a part of a big photo to show the City of Albany that the community want this pristine, remnant bushland to be protected.
